University of Maryland Research Affiliate
Through a memorandum of understanding between the University of Maryland and NOAA, residence of the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NCWCP)
are able to apply to obtain research affiliate status with the University.
- What benefits to Research Affiliates receive?
Research affiliates receive remote access to library journals through the UMD Research Port. They also receive access to recreation services, an ID card,
access to campus facilities (including the library) and the ability to apply for on campus parking.

- How do I apply to become a Research affiliate?
If applicants are not Citizens of the US, applications must include a copy of your green card.
The application is a PDF near the end of the page entitled "Affiliate Data Collection Form" located here.

Please also consider this application as Personally Identifiable Information (PII). Do not fill it out digitally or email a completed copy.
Emailing would create a digital trail of your PII.
- How do I fill out the form?
Contact your friendly librarian at 301-683-1307 or jan[dot]thomas[at]noaa[dot]gov for specifics on how to fill out the application.
Once the application is completed it will be sent to the University and usually within 5 business days, the membership will be approved
and you'll be able to go have your ID card made on campus.
- Where do I go to get my ID?
ID cards are available Mon-Fri 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM first floor lobby of the Mitchell building.
(The best time to come is Monday through Friday 8:30 AM -11:30 AM and 2 PM - 4 PM.) A Photo ID (driver's license, passport, etc.)
must be presented as proof of identity.

- I have my ID! Now what?
Now you should set up your directory account with the University of Maryland. Directory accounts for verified Research Affiliates can be set up
here.
This will help you create a username and password, which will allow you to access the UMD library content through WorldCat UMD.
Search the catalog, click on the link to the content and login!
